Arturia Tape MELLO-FI is a lo-fi effect plugin that adds the worn, warm character of vintage analog tape to your audio.
Start with a preset
Open the plugin on a track and click through the factory presets. Each one gives an instantly audible result, so you hear the tape color right away. Pick a starting point that matches the vibe you want, then tweak from there.
Drive the tape gently
Turn up the drive or input level to push the tape into saturation. You get that soft compression and harmonic distortion without wrecking the mix. A little goes a long way.
Shape the wobble
Use the wow and flutter controls to add subtle pitch instability. Start slow and increase until it feels like the tape is breathing. Keep it subtle unless you want full-on warble.
Plugin-Only Operation
Is Tape MELLO-FI a standalone app? No. It is a plugin and needs a host like Logic Pro, Ableton Live, or Pro Tools. There is no standalone mode.
Do I need a Mellotron V license? No. Tape MELLO-FI is an effect, not an instrument. It processes audio that passes through it, using the Mellotron V tape engine without requiring the instrument itself to be owned.
Does it work on Apple Silicon? Yes. Version 1.4.1-6566 supports both Intel x86 and Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 11.0 or later. Arturia Software Center handles the activation.
Mellotron V Not Required
Versus RC-20 Retro Color
RC-20 gives you a multi-effect chain with lo-fi, noise, wobble, bit-crush and more inside one plugin. Tape MELLO-FI focuses purely on the tape character from one source: the Mellotron V transport. You get less range of effects but a more specific, consistent sound.
Waves J37 Tape
J37 models a specific Studer tape machine with adjustable bias, noise reduction and tape speed. It is a faithful studio tape emulation. Tape MELLO-FI is less about accuracy and more about the worn, wobbly character of a vintage Mellotron playback mechanism. If you want a clinical tape sim, J37 wins. If you want instant lo-fi vibe, Tape MELLO-FI gets there faster.
Goodhertz Wow Control
Wow Control specializes in pitch modulation and flutter effects with deep control over LFO shapes and stereo behavior. Tape MELLO-FI includes wow and flutter but packages it with saturation and tape noise in one preset-driven workflow. Goodhertz is for tweakers who want to dial in every parameter. Tape MELLO-FI is for people who want to audition a tape sound and move on.
What People Ask Before Installing
Can I use it on a master bus? Yes. Tape MELLO-FI works on any audio track, including the master output. A light preset on the master can glue a mix together with subtle tape warmth. Just watch the drive level so you do not squash the whole song.
Does it add noise? Yes, that is part of the effect. The plugin models the tape hiss and mechanical noise of a vintage Mellotron transport. You can dial the noise level down or off in the controls if you want the tape color without the floor sound.
Will it work in my DAW? If your DAW supports AU, VST, or AAX plugins, yes. Tape MELLO-FI ships in those formats. That covers Logic, Ableton, Cubase, Pro Tools, Studio One, FL Studio, and most others. Check your host plugin folder after installing via Arturia Software Center.
How many instances can I run? That depends on your system and session. The plugin is not heavy. You can run several instances across tracks. Each instance loads its own tape engine, so use presets sparingly if you are on an older Intel Mac.
Getting the Most Out of It
Start with a vocal or a drum loop. Those sources show the tape character immediately. For vocals, a medium-drive preset with low wow gives a lo-fi vocal that sits back in the mix. For drums, push the input gain and let the tape compression even out the hits. The results are instant, so you spend less time tweaking and more time deciding if the sound fits.
