note grabber free download: UI overview
noteGRABBER — showcase 1 of 1

noteGRABBER runs on any Mac from macOS 10.12 upward, and it supports both Intel and Apple Silicon architectures. You do not need a specific DAW or a particular sample format — if the Mac can play the audio, the plugin can analyze it.

It converts audio notes into MIDI data, which makes rewriting melodies or adding new instruments over an existing sample much faster. The developer, an independent creator, built it specifically to simplify sample-based beat creation. If you have a loop or a one-shot with a melody you want to tweak, noteGRABBER grabs the notes and hands them to you as MIDI.

Bump threshold for quiet notes

noteGRABBER works out of the box, but a few adjustments make the output more useful for your project. The default sensitivity is set to a middle range. If the plugin misses quiet notes in a sample, bump the threshold down. If it catches too many ghost notes or noise, raise it. The polyphony setting matters too — set it to match the instrument in the sample. A single bass line needs only one note at a time. A piano chord needs as many voices as the chord has notes. Start at four and adjust.

Capo focuses on guitar chords

noteGRABBER sits in a small category of audio-to-MIDI plugins. A few alternatives exist, but each takes a different approach.

Capo focuses on pitch detection for guitar and bass. You load a song, it shows a spectrogram and guesses the chords. It works well for learning parts by ear, but it does not output clean MIDI data for individual notes. You end up transcribing by hand from its display.

Melodyne is the industry standard for pitch correction and audio editing. Its DNA technology lets you move individual notes in a recording. It can export MIDI, but that is a side feature. Melodyne is overkill if you only need a quick note grab from a drum loop or a synth stab.

noteGRABBER is narrower in scope. It does not try to edit audio or correct pitch. It just listens, writes down the notes as MIDI, and lets you use them. For sample-based beat makers, that is enough. You load a sample, get the MIDI, and move on.

Feed clean samples, not full mixes

  • Overloading the input. Beginners often feed noteGRABBER a full mixed track with drums, bass, and vocals. The plugin tries to analyze everything at once and returns a mess of random MIDI notes. Use a clean sample — just the instrument you want to extract.
  • Skipping the audio trim. A sample with silence at the start or end can confuse the detection. Trim the audio file to the part that actually contains notes before loading it.
  • Ignoring the polyphony setting. Leaving it at the default when the sample contains chords that outnumber the voices produces incomplete MIDI. Check what the sample actually plays and set the number accordingly.
  • Not quantizing the output. noteGRABBER captures the timing as played. If the original sample had loose timing, the MIDI notes will too. Run the output through your DAW's quantize function before building a beat around it.

Tweak sensitivity while audio loops

The plugin processes audio as a VST inside your DAW, which means you can tweak parameters while the sample plays in a loop. Change the sensitivity, hear the updated MIDI in real time without reloading the file.

The output MIDI data lands on the track the plugin is on. No separate export step. Drag the MIDI clip to a new instrument track and the notes are ready. The developer kept the workflow linear — analyze, grab, use.

noteGRABBER does not require a specific sample rate or bit depth. Standard 44.1 kHz, 16-bit files work. Higher resolution files work too. It reads what the DAW sends and handles the conversion internally.

noteGRABBER extracts text from audio recordings, ideal for journalists and researchers. noteGRABBER torrent releases of version 2.0.0 are also available if you prefer that method.
