Find the Sound

Playground mode turns the grid into a performance surface. Drag patterns, tweak velocity, and let the Accentuator push certain hits forward when you want more movement in the groove.

Get It Into Your DAW

Export audio or MIDI straight to your host. With over 8,000 samples and 240 editable presets, you can assemble a track without leaving the plugin. Standalone mode covers sketchpad sessions.

Hot Swap Auditions Without Menu Diving

Hot Swap is worth remembering. Load any preset or kit, then swap individual samples without breaking the pattern. The sequencer keeps running; you just audition replacements until the hit fits. No menu diving, no reloading the whole kit.

The Accentuator isn't a separate effect plugin. It lives inside XO and operates per lane. Flick it on and the sequencer weights certain steps louder. Works for fills or off-beat accents without manual velocity edits.

Groove Templates are another shallow-depth feature. They apply micro-timing shifts and velocity curves that humanize a rigid pattern. Pick one from the list, hear the swing, and the sequencer adjusts. You can still edit individual hits afterward.

VST, AU, AAX and Standalone Modes

XO ships in VST, AU, and AAX formats. That covers Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Cubase, and most other macOS hosts. The standalone mode works outside a DAW too — useful for browsing samples when your laptop isn't running a full session.

Drag-and-drop from the browser to Finder works for single samples. Export audio or MIDI to a track and the timing lands where the sequencer placed it. If a lane is muted, version 1.8.10 fixed MIDI export to respect that silence.

Audio export while the host is playing was fixed in the same release. No more clicks or gaps when bouncing to disk mid-session.

Workflow: Build a Drum Pattern From Scratch

1. Open XO in standalone mode or as a plugin in a new track.
2. Click a preset in the browser to load a starting kit. Any of the 240+ presets works; pick one close to the genre you need.
3. Scroll the XO Space grid for each lane. Replace the kick, snare, hi-hat, and percussion by clicking a dot — Hot Swap keeps the pattern playing.
4. Open the sequencer lane for your snare. Draw in a fill on beats 2 and 4, then toggle Accentuator to push the last hit louder.
5. Apply a Groove Template to the whole pattern. Listen to the swing; adjust the template or turn it off if the feel is too far from your mix.
6. Export audio to the DAW timeline or drag the MIDI clip into your arrangement. Muted lanes stay silent on export.
7. Repeat for verses or choruses. Save the kit as a user preset if you want to recall it later.

That routine keeps you inside XO for the whole drum track. No folder hunting, no loading samples into a sampler one by one.
