Cinematic composers and sound designers use UJAM Symphonic Elements STRIIIINGS for instant string-section textures without sample-librarian overhead.
Controls and Sound
High Strings (violins/violas) and Low Strings (cellos/basses) — each section adjusts independently. You blend, mute, or solo them.
Mood Dial — sweeps from tight and dry to wide and ambient. Changes the reverb tail and stereo image.
Expression — dynamic contour. Low gives a flat, pad-like sustain; high adds attack swell and bow noise.
Complexity — layers more articulations as you turn it up. Low is plain sustains; high introduces spiccato accents, tremolo, and overlaid runs.
Motion — a built-in step sequencer for rhythmic gates. Creates pulsing patterns without MIDI programming.
All controls map to MIDI CC, so you can automate them in your DAW. The plug-in ships with over 200 sound designer presets, drawn from the same Hans Zimmer source recordings that launched the Symphonic Elements series.
Texture Instrument, Not a Solo Violin
New users often load STRIIIINGS and expect to play it like a standard string library. That approach gives poor results. This is a texture instrument, not a solo-violin player. A few specific traps show up repeatedly.
- Playing chords in the low register. Low Strings (cellos and basses) get muddy fast when you hold dense voicings below middle C. Stick to single notes or octaves in that range.
- Ignoring the Motion sequencer. Many producers write rhythmic MIDI by hand when the Motion knob already generates gate patterns. Leaving it at zero misses half the instrument's character.
- Cranking Complexity to maximum. Full Complexity adds spiccato, tremolo, and runs. Layered on every note, it turns into noise. Use it as an accent, not a default.
- Forgetting the double-launch. The plug-in must be opened twice the first time you load it in a session. Skipping that step leaves you with silence and a confused DAW.
- Blending both sections evenly. High Strings and Low Strings at the same level create a washed-out center. Pick a lead layer and use the other for weight or contrast.
Mood Dial and Crossfade for Film Composers
STRIIIINGS rewards three kinds of Mac users. Film composers working to picture benefit most: the Mood Dial and Crossfade control let you reshape a cue's emotional weight in seconds without swapping samples. Game composers get the same speed for adaptive layers, switching between High Strings and Low Strings per gameplay state.
Beatmakers and electronic producers are the third group. The Motion sequencer turns static pads into rhythmic beds that lock to tempo. A hip-hop or trap producer can drop a pulsing string line under a beat without touching a MIDI editor. UJAM built the instrument for modern string-section textures with a sound-design edge, and that fits any genre that uses atmospheric layers.
Users on older Macs running macOS 10.14 or later should have no trouble. The plug-in needs 4 GB of RAM and runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon. It does not stream from disk like a full orchestral library, so it stays lightweight in a session.
Workflow: Building a Cinematic Bridge
- Set the tempo and key. Match your DAW project to the track. STRIIIINGS responds to the host tempo for Motion patterns.
- Load the plug-in twice. Insert it on a new instrument track. Open the interface, close it, then open it again. This is required only on first launch per session.
- Pick a starting preset. Browse the 200-plus sound designer presets. Find one that matches the emotional arc you need. Start with a Low Strings preset for weight or a High Strings preset for air.
- Write a simple line. Record or draw a single-note line in the low-mid register. Avoid chords. Let the Complexity and Expression controls shape the articulation.
- Add Motion for rhythmic energy. Turn the Motion knob to engage the step sequencer. Adjust the rate to match quarter or eighth notes. The gates pulse without any MIDI programming.
- Blend with the Crossfade control. Bring in the other string section gradually. For a bridge, start with Low Strings alone, then crossfade to High Strings over four or eight bars.
- Automate the Mood Dial. Draw a CC lane that sweeps from dry to wide across the section. This gives the bridge a spatial arc that matches the rising dynamics.
Export the resulting audio or freeze the track. The entire process takes under ten minutes once you know the controls. That speed is the point — STRIIIINGS is built for quick, expressive string textures, not for micromanaging sample libraries.
