Version 2.5.0 ships with an updated ARK plugin (13.5) and drops the launch warning on macOS 27. But the deeper tools are what keep experienced users on this app.
What a Power User Cares About
- It combines application sources and hardware input devices into one virtual output.
- Use it as the capture device in Audio Hijack to record any app's audio without system-level plugins.
- The wired interface lets you build a routing map, not just pick inputs and outputs.
Why the ARK 13.5 Update Matters
ARK 13.5 is the audio kernel extension that handles the low-level routing. The update improves stability on macOS 27 and keeps latency predictable when you chain multiple apps. No more kernel panics from stale plugins.
Workflow: Record a Podcast with Loopback and a Separate Voice Track
This is a common scenario. You want clean microphone audio and app audio (Skype, Zoom, a browser call) in separate tracks for post-production. Here is how to set it up.
- Open Loopback and create a new virtual output device.
- Set your physical microphone as an audio input device in Loopback.
- Set Zoom or your chat app to output audio to the Loopback virtual device.
- Launch Audio Hijack. Create a new capture session.
- Set Audio Hijack's input to your physical microphone.
- Set a second Audio Hijack input to the Loopback virtual device.
- Record. You get one track with your mic, one track with the call audio, synced from the start.
No extra cables, no aggregate devices in macOS Sound settings. The routing is all inside Rogue Amoeba's wired interface.
Rename Virtual Devices Per Setup
- You can rename each virtual device. If you run multiple recording setups, label them "Podcast Rig" or "Streaming Capture" so you don't guess which is which.
- The Loopback window shows a live signal indicator per input. It is a small light next to each source. Green means audio is flowing. No need to open Audio Hijack to confirm the mic is live.
- Loopback works with Elgato Game Capture hardware. Route the hardware's audio through the Loopback virtual device, and your mic input joins it. One cable, one video file, both audio sources mixed.
- You can combine multiple input devices into one virtual device. If you run a USB mic and a separate headset mic, Loopback merges them into one source that any app sees as a single input.
Check Target App Audio Output
- No audio after creating the virtual device. Check that the target app (Zoom, Chrome, Discord) has its audio output set to the Loopback device. macOS sometimes resets the default output after a system update. Open Loopback, confirm the device is listed, then set it manually in the app's audio settings.
- Microphone audio is delayed behind app audio. This is usually a buffer issue in Audio Hijack. Open Audio Hijack's preference panel and lower the capture buffer size. Smaller buffer means less lag but more CPU. Start at 256 samples, test, and adjust up if you hear crackles.
- Loopback creates a virtual device but it does not appear in any app's input list. Restart the app that needs the input. Some apps scan for audio devices only at launch. If that does not fix it, restart the Loopback engine from the Loopback menu bar icon: right-click it and choose "Restart Core."
- The ARK plugin update (13.5) causes a permissions prompt on first run after updating. macOS 27 tightens security on kernel-level audio drivers. Approve the prompt. It is a one-time thing. After that, the warning is gone for good.
Enable Launch at Login
- Turn on "Launch at Login." Loopback is a utility, not an app you open for a session. Set it to start in the background so your virtual devices are always available. Do this from the Loopback menu bar icon's preferences.
- Name your virtual devices early. The default "Loopback Output 1" is not helpful when you have three of them. Rename them in the Loopback window while the setup is fresh in your head.
- Disable audio input devices you are not using. If you have a built-in mic and an external mic, only add the one you use to Loopback's input list. Fewer sources mean fewer places to check when audio is missing.
These settings cut down on frustration later. Most issues come from routing conflicts, not from the app itself.
- Support for macOS 27 added.
- No warning on launch under macOS 27.
- ARK plugin updated to version 13.5.
- macOS 11 or later
- Intel or Apple Silicon

Questions I get about this line
Yes, version 2.5.0 supports macOS 27 and no longer shows a warning on launch.
ARK is Rogue Amoeba's audio handling plugin. Version 13.5 ships with Loopback 2.5.0.
Yes. Loopback appears as an output device, so you can select it as the capture source in Audio Hijack.
The install order
- Open the downloaded disk image.
- Drag the app to the Applications folder alias.
