IT generalists and power users who keep a dozen Macs running will appreciate what MediaMate does: it sits on top of macOS and swaps out the stock volume, brightness, and keyboard backlight HUDs for cleaner, more compact versions. It also handles now playing overlays.
Custom volume HUD — Replaces the built-in macOS volume HUD with a smaller, less intrusive display.
Custom brightness HUD — Same treatment for the brightness OSD, plus keyboard backlight controls.
Now playing overlay — Shows current track info from any media app.
System integration — Works as a menu-bar app, no launch agent needed.
Sequoia Sleep Wake Overlay Fixes
The latest build refines how the overlays behave while keeping the same feature set. Two changes affect daily use:
- Improved compatibility with macOS 15 Sequoia. The HUDs no longer flash or delay when waking from sleep on newer OS versions. This matters when you manage machines that sleep overnight.
- Touch Bar mode was updated so the now playing overlay stays on top of the Touch Bar controls instead of dropping behind them. On Touch Bar Macs this was a consistent annoyance — now it works as expected.
No new features were added. The focus was stability for the two macOS versions MediaMate covers (Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia).
Real-world scenario: the clinic front desk
Set up six iMacs at a dental practice. Reception staff adjust brightness multiple times a day — morning sun, afternoon glare, evening clean-up. The stock macOS HUD is oversized and blocks the patient schedule window. MediaMate shrinks that HUD to a slim bar that appears in the top center of the screen, outside the schedule area. Staff also use the keyboard backlight slider when the room dims for exams. One less thing to click away from the patient chart.
For the hygienist who streams music during procedures, the now playing overlay shows the current track without opening Music or Spotify. Simple. No training needed.
Compared to similar apps
MediaMate is not the only HUD replacement on Mac. Here is how it stacks up against two alternatives.
BackgroundMusic — Focused on per-app audio control and recording. It has a HUD for volume only, not brightness or keyboard backlight. No now playing support. Better for audio engineers, worse for general Mac management.
Ice — More a menu-bar organizer than a HUD tool. It can hide menu-bar icons and show a custom volume slider in the bar, but it does not replace the full-screen volume or brightness HUDs. Good for decluttering the menu bar, not for replacing system overlays.
MediaMate covers volume, brightness, keyboard backlight, and now playing in one lightweight app. No separate modules, no launch agents, no configuration files to push across machines. That makes it the better choice for an IT generalist deploying to a fleet of Macs where consistency matters more than deep audio controls.
