909 kick drum: UI overview
Sonic Academy KICK — showcase 1 of 1

The click-shaping section is where KICK earns its keep. Three independent areas let you sculpt the attack transient, so a 909 kick drum can go from a soft thump to a sharp, pitched click without leaving the plugin.

In a session, KICK sits on its own track. You feed it a simple MIDI pattern, then route the output to a drum bus. The built-in EQ, compressor, limiter, and distortion handle most of the tone-shaping right there, so you don’t need a chain of plugins to get a usable sound.

  1. Create a MIDI track and load KICK as an instrument.
  2. Write a basic four-on-the-floor pattern.
  3. Use the click areas to shape the attack.
  4. Adjust the sub-bass waveform — beyond a plain sine — to thicken the low end.
  5. Run the output to a drum bus, then apply KICK’s effects for glue.

Fix MIDI Routing, Click Envelope, and Phase Issues

Most problems with KICK 2 come from three places: MIDI routing, the click envelope, and phase with other tracks.

No Sound After Loading

Check your DAW's MIDI channel. KICK expects MIDI notes in the right octave range — usually C1 to C2 for a standard kick. If you're sending a C3, you'll get nothing or a very weak sound. Drop the note two octaves and try again.

Click Sounds Thin or Absent

The click layer is sampled, not synthesized. If the transient feels weak, open the click-shaping areas and raise the level of the first click slot. Some presets have the click turned down by default. Also check that your attack envelope isn't too slow — a fast attack lets the click punch through.

Sub-Bass Clashes with the Bassline

KICK's sub oscillator can rumble down to 30 Hz, which is great for techno but dangerous in a mix. Route KICK to its own bus, then sidechain your bassline to that bus. Or use KICK's built-in EQ to cut below 40 Hz if you're layering with another kick sample. The compressor inside KICK can also tighten the low end without extra plugins.

Presets Sound Different After Loading

This happens when your session sample rate doesn't match what the preset was designed for. KICK 1.1.1 handles 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz well, but extreme rates like 96 kHz can shift the click transient. Stick to 44.1 kHz for electronic music and reload the preset.

Putting KICK 2 Into a Real Workflow

Start a track from silence. No loops, no samples — just MIDI and KICK.

  1. Load KICK 2 on a new instrument track. Write a four-on-the-floor pattern at 128 BPM, one bar, looped.
  2. Pick a factory preset from the 230+ on offer. Choose something close to what you hear in your head — a hard techno kick or a soft house thud.
  3. Go into the click-shaping areas. Turn down the second click layer and raise the first by 3 dB. You want a single sharp attack, not a double hit. Listen for the transient cutting through.
  4. Switch the sub oscillator from sine to a saw wave. Crank the low-frequency oscillator to modulate the sub pitch slightly — enough to add movement without wobbling the root note.
  5. Add distortion. It adds grit without turning the kick into noise. Follow with the limiter set at -0.5 dB to catch peaks.
  6. Record two bars of MIDI. Drag the kick to an audio track. Now you have a dry, clean kick file you can layer under a sampled 909 kick drum or a live kick mic.

This whole workflow takes about five minutes. You end up with a kick that has its own character and sits well in a mix without extra processing.

How KICK 2 Works With Other Apps and macOS

KICK 2 is a 64-bit x86 plugin. On macOS, it runs in any DAW that supports VST3 or AU — Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Bitwig, Cubase. It also works as a standalone instrument if your DAW can host plugins outside the timeline.

For sampling, export a kick from KICK and drag it into your sampler of choice. The sub-bass and click stay together in one file, so you get the full sound.

If you use macOS' built-in audio routing, you can record KICK's output directly into a new audio track via the internal bus. This is useful for building a custom kick library: pick a preset, tweak the click, record four bars, repeat. No extra cables or third-party apps needed.

The plugin's low CPU footprint means you can run multiple instances on one track for layering. For example, load two KICK instances — one for the sub punch, one for the click snap — then blend their outputs. macOS handles the routing through your DAW's mixer without issue.

Typical jobs: layering under a live kick, reinforcing a sampled 909, or building a kick from scratch. The LFO adds movement for techno or trance.

Questions I get about this line

No. KICK 2 is the current version (1.1.1), while the earlier release was named Kick by Nicky Romero.

The build is 64-bit x86, so it runs under Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon.

It has an equalizer, compressor, limiter, distortion, and one low-frequency oscillator.

The install order

  1. Open the package and read the included installation and activation instructions.
  2. Follow the steps inside the package to complete the setup.
