spectralayers: UI overview
Steinberg SpectraLayers Pro — showcase 1 of 1
The Pattern Finder scans the spectrum for similar sound events, then lets you batch-process them all at once. That is SpectraLayers Pro at its most useful: finding the needle and removing it without touching the haystack. ARA 2 integration means Nuendo and Cubase users can edit spectral data right inside the host timeline. The AI-based track-to-stems unmixing separates a full mix into individual components, and the manual de-esser handles sibilance without guessing. You get the same tools whether you are restoring an old recording or cleaning up a voiceover. The installer runs the standard disk image procedure, and you are editing.

Typical session

Open SpectraLayers Pro and drop in a stereo mix that has a persistent low hum underneath the vocal. The waveform looks clean, but the spectrum shows a horizontal bar at 120 Hz. Select the Frequency Selection tool, highlight that bar across the full duration, and press Delete. The hum is gone. The vocal and the kick drum underneath are untouched.

Next, switch to the AI Track-to-Stems unmixing tool. Select the "vocals" stem. The app splits the mix in a few seconds and presents the isolated vocal as a new layer. Drop the original mix out of sight and work on the vocal alone. Apply the Voice Denoiser to clean up the room tone. A quick sweep of the manual de-esser takes out the harsh "s" sounds without dulling the rest.

Now put the cleaned vocal back into the mix. Use the layer mixer to blend the original instrumental with the processed vocal stem. Export the result as a 24-bit WAV file. Total time: under ten minutes.

Editing One Syllable at a Time

Snag: Selection is too wide

You draw a rectangle over a noise burst and delete it, but you take out the vocal transient underneath. The fix: shrink the selection to the exact frequency range of the noise. Use the Frequency Selection tool with a narrow brush, or switch to the Time Selection tool and edit only the noise event, not the whole frequency band.

Snag: AI unmixing leaves artifacts

Track-to-stems is aggressive. If the vocal stem has a metallic echo, lower the separation strength in the tool's settings. A setting around 70 percent often gives a cleaner result with less bleed. Alternatively, run the Voice Denoiser on the separated stem to filter out the artifacts.

Snag: ARA 2 does not appear in Cubase

First, confirm both SpectraLayers Pro and Cubase are up to date. Second, check that the ARA 2 extension is installed inside SpectraLayers. Open the app's preferences and look under "Extensions." If it is missing, download the ARA 2 bridge from the Steinberg site and run the installer again.

Snag: Pattern Finder selects nothing

Pattern Finder needs a clear repeated event. If the sound is too quiet or too short, it cannot find a match. Increase the gain of the target layer before running Pattern Finder. Or select a louder instance of the sound as the pattern reference.

Post-Production Dialogue and ADR Workflows

Post-production engineers working on dialogue and ADR use the manual de-esser and Voice Denoiser daily. They edit one syllable at a time and leave the background ambience intact. The 3D visualisation helps them see breath pops and mouth clicks that a waveform hides. No guesswork.

Music producers who record live instruments use the track-to-stems unmixing to separate a bad take from a live recording. They can re-amp the guitar stem or replace the bass part without losing the rest of the arrangement. The Pattern Finder is useful for removing a single bad note in a piano chord without hitting the adjacent notes.

Restoration specialists working on archival recordings rely on the manual selection tools and the frequency-based editing. They clean vinyl crackle, tape hiss, and clipping distortion without affecting the musical content. The application handles mono and stereo sources equally well, and the batch processing in Pattern Finder saves hours on a full album.

DAW users on Nuendo or Cubase get the deepest integration through ARA 2. They can open SpectraLayers as a spectral editor inside the project and see the edits update in real time. No bouncing, no exporting. That workflow alone makes it worth adding to a post-production toolkit.

Questions I get about this line

Yes, ARA 2 integration is included for use with Nuendo and Cubase.
