Starting Skadovsk: Trading, Stocking, and Clearing Bandits
You start in Skadovsk, the makeshift bar and hub of Zaton. Talk to the traders and quest givers. Stock up on ammo and bandages. Grab a side mission to clear a nearby warehouse of bandits.
Travel on foot through the reeds. Watch the compass for anomaly fields — they look like shimmering air. Use a bolt to trigger one from a distance. Loot the corpse that the anomaly was guarding, but listen for footsteps. Every stalker you meet is either a trader or a threat.
Reach the warehouse. Clear it room by room. The new A-Life simulation means enemies shout to each other and flank. Take your time. Loot the stashes, repair your gear at the mechanic back at Skadovsk, then head to Jupiter for the main story. That is the rhythm: quest, travel, fight, return, upgrade.
Emissions change the plan. When the sky turns orange, drop everything and find a basement or a train car. The game saves as you enter, so you lose nothing. Wait it out, then resume.
What Beginners Get Wrong
- Ignoring artifacts and detectors. Early-game cash comes from selling artifacts found in anomalies. The Veles detector is worth buying as soon as you can afford it.
- Holding onto damaged gear. Weapons and armor degrade. Repair them often. A jammed gun in a firefight means a reload from your last save.
- Skipping side quests. Side characters give unique rewards and story threads that affect the ending. The game expects you to explore, not just rush the main line.
- Not watching the emission timer. The PDA shows emission warning signs. Treat them like a deadline. If you cannot reach shelter, find a low building or a tunnel entrance.
- Trading with the wrong faction. Factions track your reputation. Killing duty squads locks their traders. Decide early who you want as allies.
