BetterDisplay Pro runs on any Mac that can handle macOS 26, whether it's an Intel model or Apple Silicon. That covers the current lineup and most recent machines, so the app isn't picky about hardware. It's a display manager first: you get virtual displays, flexible HiDPI scaling, and full black dimming, all controlled from the menu bar.

Version 5.0.6 keeps the core features that made BetterDisplay useful — DDC control, HDMI-CEC, picture-in-picture, custom 3D LUTs, and XDR/HDR brightness — while tightening a few rough edges. The device control configuration is simpler to set up, and multi-display DDC responses feel faster. Sharpening effects are stronger, and video filter automation is now scriptable. If you manage external monitors on a Mac, this is the version to grab.

Getting comfortable with BetterDisplay Pro

The first thing to do after installing is open the app from the menu bar and walk through each display setting once. You don't need to change anything yet — just see what's available for your connected monitors. The scaling slider, the brightness controls, and the color tuning panels are all right there. Knowing where they live saves you hunting later.

If you use a laptop with an external monitor, try the virtual display feature early. It lets you create an extra screen that macOS treats as a real monitor. Use it for chat windows, reference images, or log files. Set it up in the first session so you know how it behaves before you need it under a deadline.

Check the HDMI-CEC control if your monitor supports it. That lets BetterDisplay manage power and input switching over the HDMI connection. It's a small convenience that makes a big difference if you toggle between a Mac and a game console or a work laptop. Enable it once and forget about it.

Avoid XDR/HDR upscaling on unsupported displays

The most frequent error is turning on XDR/HDR brightness upscaling on a display that doesn't need it. The feature is designed for compatible Apple Silicon Macs with HDR-capable monitors. If you enable it on an older panel or an Intel machine, you may get oversaturated colors or clipped highlights. Leave it off unless you know your display supports HDR and you need the extra range.

Another mistake is ignoring the black dimming setting. It's not a brightness slider — it adjusts how the app handles near-black content. Crank it too high and you lose shadow detail. Start with the default and nudge it up only if you see banding in dark scenes.

Beginners also forget that BetterDisplay applies settings per display, not globally. If you adjust scaling on your laptop screen, it doesn't carry over to your external monitor. Check which display is active in the menu bar before making changes. That saves you from wondering why nothing seems to happen.

Auto-apply video filters during full-screen playback

The stream video filter automation in version 5.0.6 is easy to overlook. It applies a sharpening or color filter automatically when BetterDisplay detects full-screen video playback. You can script it to kick in only during certain apps, which is handy if you use the machine for both editing and casual watching.

The sharper sharpening effect in this build is noticeable on text, especially on HiDPI displays at non-native scaling. If you work in a code editor or a terminal, toggle the sharpening on and compare. It cleans up font edges without introducing artifacts on most screens.

Multi-display DDC control is worth testing even if you only have one external monitor. The faster responses in 5.0.6 mean brightness and contrast changes feel immediate. If you ever need to dim a monitor quickly during a presentation or a late-night session, you'll appreciate the lack of delay.

Picture-in-picture mode is not just for video. Put a small reference window over your main workspace — a browser with docs, a terminal with logs, or a PDF of notes. Resize it and position it where it doesn't block your work. It's a better alternative to juggling full windows on a single display.

The simplified device control configuration in this release means you can set up DDC or HDMI-CEC once per monitor and forget it. The app remembers the configuration per display, even after disconnecting and reconnecting. That is the kind of convenience that becomes invisible after a week — and that is exactly the point.

Questions I get about this line

Yes, the app supports both Intel and Apple Silicon architectures, as long as the Mac runs macOS 26 or later.

It handles brightness, color, HiDPI scaling, virtual displays, DDC, and HDMI-CEC, plus advanced options like 3D LUTs and XDR/HDR brightness.

The install order

  1. Open the downloaded disk image.
  2. Drag the app into the Applications folder alias.
  3. Once copying finishes, open the app from Launchpad.
