If you've used FontLab or RoboFont, Glyphs takes the same idea further: a Mac-native editor that builds OpenType fonts from scratch or modifies existing ones. Before you download, here's what matters for your hardware.

Runs on macOS 12+ and Both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs

Glyphs 4 requires macOS 12 or later. It runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, so it works on the Air in your bag or the older iMac in the back office.

Edit and Create Fonts

You get full control over glyph outlines, spacing, and kerning. The app integrates with macOS services and workflow tools, plus it supports contextual menu text editing for quick tweaks.

Built for Type Designers Crafting Custom Fonts from Scratch

Type designers building a custom typeface from scratch will feel right at home. The toolset is focused — no bloated windows or panels you never touch. Font editors who need to adjust spacing or add kerning pairs across a whole family will save time here too. Graphic designers who occasionally need to modify a logo font or create a handful of custom glyphs for a client project will find the learning curve manageable. Anyone running a Mac-based design studio where font files move between designers and developers will appreciate the native export options and the Viewer companion app.

Drawing the Lowercase 'a' for a Client's Sans-Serif Family

You open Glyphs after breakfast. The project is a small sans-serif family for a client's web redesign — regular, bold, italic. The canvas is clean, no startup wizard, just the glyph grid. You start by drawing the lowercase 'a' and 'b' to set the bone structure: stem width, x-height, cap height. Each curve snaps predictably because the path tools respect the grid you set.

Mid-morning, you import an existing font file to reuse the punctuation set. Glyphs opens it without complaint. You adjust the sidebearings on the numerals, then run the autospacing feature for a first pass. The contextual menu pops up when you right-click a glyph — you jump to its pair-kerning window and tweak the 'AV' gap. No tab-switching, no hunting for a separate panel.

By lunch, the regular weight looks solid. You export a PDF specimen and send it to the client. After lunch, you duplicate the regular layer, adjust the italic angle, and let the interpolation engine handle the bold weight. You check the Preview panel to see how three weights read together in a paragraph. Close enough. You export the SVG set for the developer, then call it done.

Set Units per Em Before You Draw Anything

After the first launch, open Preferences and adjust these:

  • Units per Em: Set this before you draw anything. 1000 is standard for most text fonts; 2048 works for display faces. Changing it mid-project shifts all your measurements.
  • Grid spacing and snap: Tune it to your drawing style. A coarser grid helps rough sketching; a finer one helps when you're aligning serifs.
  • Language: The interface supports English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Russian, Czech, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. Pick whatever keeps you fastest.
  • Auto-save interval: Set it shorter than the default if you tend to work in long sessions without pausing.

These few tweaks take two minutes and keep the workspace set to your habits, not the developer's defaults.

Glyphs free download mac lets type designers create and edit professional fonts on macOS. That same build handles everything from a single glyph edit to a full typeface family.

Export to PNG, SVG, PDF, or SFSymbols straight from the editor. For a live look, the companion Glyphs Viewer shows your font as you work.

The install order
